The old quarter contains valuable cultural and architectural heritage, in particular, the medieval bridge, which spans the River Eume and was built on the site of the original wooden Roman structure. Pontedeume is a major link between the Ferrol and A Coru\u00f1a estuaries. It is also one of the gateways to the Natural Park of Fragas do Eume, a unique atlantic forest.<\/span><\/p>\n

Known as the final destination of the pilgrim route el Camino de Santiago (the Santiago Way) and supposedly where the remains of St James the Apostle lie. It is said that these are to be found in the Cathedral of Santiago, consecrated in 1211. Its facades of elaborate stonework stand on great squares within the medieval walls of the old city.<\/span><\/p>\n

As Fragas do Eume is one of the best-preserved riverside Atlantic forests in Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is home to numerous rare species of flora and fauna, some cultural relics and echoes of its extraordinary history, especially that of the medieval period.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the heart of As Fragas, on a promontary above the river, the Monastery of Caaveiro<\/strong>\u00a0was founded in the IX century in the town of Calavario, whence the name.<\/span><\/p>\n

The monastery of San Juan de Caaveiro was founded in the XII century to give refuge to anchorites. It was built in the Romanesque style.<\/span><\/p>\n

Betanzos, the capital of Galician gothic. Its old quarter was declared a Historical-Artistic complex in 1970. Pilgrims following the English Way (camino ingl\u00e9s) reach Betanzos after leaving Pontedeume and before they arrive at the hamlet of Bruma, a few kilometres from Santiago de Compostela.<\/span><\/p>\n

Redes is a small seaside village which contains a series of treasures not to be missed: colourful casa indianas (mansions built in Colonial style by emigrants returning from the Americas), a lively port, a charming beach and much you will want to photograph. The village takes its name from the many fishing nets, hung up to dry in the sun after a hard day’s work at sea.<\/span><\/p>\n

A small church, built in the Romanesque style in the XII century. The hermitage stands out for its arched doorway with six archivolts supported by decorated columns.<\/span><\/p>\n

This church already existed in 1185. This can clearly be seen shape and finishing of the entrance, where<\/span>
there are two columns and the lamb of God on the tympanum.<\/span>
The nave and the apse are semicircular, finished in the the second half of the 12th<\/span><\/p>\n

Century. Surrounding it<\/span>
is a lintel with modillions and, over one of the buttresses, a curious small campanile which rises above a<\/span>
lateral buttress, surely due to the acoustics.<\/span>
The most outstanding feature is the porch which shelters the entrance.<\/span><\/p>\n

A manor house, built in the 18th Century, in Mari\u00f1\u00e1n, in the municipality of Bergondo (Galicia). It was declared a Historical-Artistic complex in 1972.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Towers of Meir\u00e1s are set close to the centre of extensive grounds on a hillside overlooking a wide<\/span>
valley. The property is surrounded by a strong stone wall.<\/span><\/p>\n

The main building is in Romanesque style, with three square, crenellated towers of differing heights,<\/span>
linked by lower structures. The enclosure is built of granite, the largest pieces being used for the corners,<\/span>
spans and finishings.<\/span><\/p>\n

The origin of this Manor House goes back to the 13th Century, although the current buildings are 18th Century, in the Baroque style chosen by the then owner, Fernando Gayoso Arias Ozores, 8th Count of Amarante and Lord of Oca.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the 19th Century, the garden was extended by Fran\u00e7ois Viet, the gardener of Campo del Moro in Madrid. These gardens are among the best examples of gardening to be found in Galicia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The castle of Andrade, also known as the castle of Nogueirosa, is a medieval structure built in a strategic position, overlooking the greater part of the Eume valley, most of the district of Pontedeume, the Ares estuary and Cabanas beach.<\/span><\/p>\n

The monastery is situated in the parish of San Fiz de Monfero. Founded in 1134, it includes Baroque features with a chessboard facade of slate encrusted in granite. With its sole tower,the other having been destroyed by lightning, it appears on Monfero’s coat of arms.<\/span><\/p>\n

The lower level was inspired by the cloister of Santiago cathedral, while the upper is pure Renaissance. Inside, there are the tombs of the Andrade family, owners and Lords of these lands.<\/span><\/p>\n
